Story Thieves: Secret Origins
By now everyone in my family knows that I am hooked to the ‘Story Thieves’ series because I have read the first two in quick succession and waiting eagerly to read the third book. My parents know that the best way to reward me if I do well in my exams is to get me a book. So, when I got good marks in my half yearly exams they got me ‘Story Thieves: Secret Origins’ and I was utterly delighted. The series is written by James Riley and published by Aladdin books in September 2017. Its cover was designed by Laura Lyn DiSiena and it has a little less than 400 pages. Its genre is fiction.
Bethany, as usual, travels to a new fictional world to rescue her father in this third book in the New York Times bestselling series, Story Thieves. The plot goes like this: Owen and his half- fictional friend Bethany have sworn that they would not go jumping in books. But by accident a portal takes them inside a comic book and they land in Jupiter City.
When they reach Jupiter City, they discover that the city was once filled with heroes and villains, but now only the Dark’s shadows remained. Even the villains are scared of him and the heroes have either run away or the Dark has controlled them. The main hero, Doc Twilight, has been captured by the Dark. The duo calls some new and old friends to help them defeat the Dark.
But who is the Dark? Who gave him all the powers? Who is Doc Twilight? Who is Nobody and why is he writing these books? What happened when Bethany’s father disappeared? It all comes down to Bethany’s secret origins.
The main characters in this book are Owen, Bethany, Charm, Gwen, the Dark, Doc Twilight, Kid Twilight, the Rotten Banana and Nobody. Except Owen, Bethany and Charm, all characters are new. Gwen is a book character and is also known as Earth Girl. Rotten Banana,whose name I found very funny, was a supervillain but as the Dark had overtaken the city, he had no choice but to help the children. Kid Twilght was Doc’s apprentice. Doc was (spoiler alert!) Bethany’s long-lost father and like the the last book he played a double role which I will not tell you about. You already know pretty much about the Dark. Nobody was a villain. He was a part of the comic book and is a fictional character. He was the main villain which I think will be destroyed in the final book.
I really enjoyed reading this book as was with the other books in the series. The only bad thing is you can't put the book down because it's so engaging, then the author leaves you on a cliff for an entire year while you wait for the next book to be written. Although its still questionable whether good triumphs over evil, because both have been glorified to a certain extent.
I recommend this book for readers of age 9-12. If you read this book and like it, I recommend the next book in the series, which is Story Thieves: Pick the Plot which is a very interesting book. Another series by James Riley is Half upon a time series.
